Stevensville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 568

Our Unit was organized in April of 1949 and we received our charter on June 16, 1949. We had eighteen charter members and our Units first officers of 1949 were, President, Julie Skinner, Vice President, Sylvia Schulz, Secretary, Sally Horn, Treasurer, Jeanne Spitzer, Chaplain Bernice DaDan, Executive Committee, Jeanne Mongrieg and Carrie Belle Robards. Two of the orignal 18 charter members are still active today.

Our Unit first met in a room above the old fire station. From there they held their meetings in the Mongrieg Hotel which was located on Red Arrow Hwy and John Beers Road. When the Legion built their home on Johnson and Legion Roads, the Auxiliary then moved their meetings to the new home. At that time the Auxiliary held their meetings twice a month. Following each meeting the ladies had a social hour with games and snacks, a tradition which is still held today

There was a need for card tables in order to conduct many of their events so their first major fund raiser was organized to purchase the tables. The ladies sold advertizing space to the Stevensville merchants and displayed these ads on the surface of the card tables. The project proved to be very successful.

The Auxiliary is a non-political, civililan organization of women. Our main purpose is to assist the Legion to accomplish it's objectives. Some of our original projects are still done today. We provide Christmas gifts to Veteran's at the Battle Creek Veteran's Hospital. Area Veteran's and their families are aided in their time of need with funds received from our Annual Poppy Day, all monies received is used strictly for Veterans.

Our meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the downstairs meeting room. From our original eighteen members our membership has grown to over two hundred and sixty members.
